Treble glory still on for young Reds - Updated 05/05/09

FC United’s Youth Team is still gunning for glory on three fronts with two cup final dates booked in May and a play-off semi-final against Marine this Sunday.

Peter Freakes’ youngsters secured second spot in the North West Youth Alliance Premiership B table behind Stalybridge Celtic on Tuesday night and now they travel to Merseyside to take on the champions of Premiership A as the season ends with a play-off between the top two teams in each division.

Marine are undefeated all season but Freakes is extremely confident that his fledglings can be the first to take their scalp. He said: "No disrespect to them but I think our side of the league has been far superior to Marine’s and because of that I think we’ll do it.

"It’s hard to know for certain how good they are but looking at the teams that have finished third and fourth in Premiership A, Altrincham and Woodley, we’ve beaten them comfortably in the cup this year so I think we’ll be able to beat Marine too."??

If FC United win, they will take on the winner of Stalybridge versus Nantwich Town in the final with the date and venue still to be confirmed.

Whatever happens on Sunday, the Reds will have their first cup final on Thursday against Nantwich in The Neil Thomason Memorial Cup. Freakes’ Fledglings have brushed aside Ashton Athletic 3-1, Altrincham 4-0 and Woodley Sports 4-0 en route to the final and now they come up against the Dabbers for the first time.

Freakes is confident that his side will have too much for the young Cheshire team. He said: "We’ve got a solid defence, we’ve got a creative midfield and then we’ve got Jamie Mack who can score goals for us. I’m confident we’ll do it."??

Sunday’s game is at The Arriva Stadium, College Road, Crosby, L23 3AS with kick-off at 2:00pm. Admission is £2 adults and £1 concessions.

Thursday’s cup final is at Woodley Sports, Lambeth Stadium, Lambeth Grove, SK6 1QX with kick-off at 7.45pm. Admission is £2 adults and £1 concessions.

And then, on 24 May, the young Reds will take on Middleton Colts in the Manchester FA Youth Cup Final for what could be their third trophy of the season. More details to follow nearer the time.
