Dare(red)devils required for Charity event

FC United have been invited to take part in a charity abseil in joint-aid of the club’s Development Fund and The Opal Foundation.

The former is, of course, the club’s nest-egg and will fund our eventual and hopefully not too distant move from Gigg Lane to our own purpose built ground. The latter is a charity founded by Stuart Wall, owner of Opal Property Group Limited, and is a committed, self-funded foundation dedicated to improving the lives of young people, their families and communities.

This year, Opal Foundation’s main fundraising event is a Charity Abseil, which will take place on 27th September 2009, in Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds. The abseil events are hoped to raise £40,000 to work with AMREF (African Medical Research Foundation), in order to provide a borehole to deliver clean water for pastoralist communities of South Omo, one of the most remote parts of Ethiopia.

For non-FCUM people, the Abseil will be a perfect opportunity for anyone who has an ethical conscience, who wants to conquer their fear of heights, or just wants an adrenalin rush. As well as that, for United fans it’s another chance to raise much needed cash for the club as well as helping the Opal Foundation. All monies raised by FC supporting entrants will be split between the two causes with the exact details still to be agreed.

The invitation has come from FC United fan and Opal Foundation Director Barbara McLoughlin who said of the abseil "we do hope FC United supporters are able to support our cause and help us progress that one step further in achieving our goal of providing clean water for communities in South Omo. And if we can raise money for the club at the same time then I’ll be delighted!".

The Charity Abseil will be a fun day out, with food and drink available, and dancers and musicians providing entertainment and light relief for nervous participants.

To show our appreciation to everyone who is supporting our campaign, we have opened a thank you page and a wall of fame on our website, www.opal-foundation.com and if you’re interested in taking part and supporting two very worthy causes then please email developmentfund@fc-utd.co.uk now and we’ll send you more details.
