Friendly game - Ramsbottom United v FC United XI, Tuesday 3 August 2010

Memories are made of this. Remember the Rammy Rattler, the steam train full of FC United fans on their way to the game against Ramsbottom United at the end of season 2006-7. On a sunny Spring day, bystanders along the East Lancashire Railway line gaped at a train with steam belching from the front and bar scarves fluttering from every window. The Easter bunny, who looked more like the Donnie Darko rabbit, gave out chocolate eggs to any children who weren’t too frightened to eat. A few of the crowd accidentally invaded the pitch during the game, because a barrier buckled due to the capacity crowd, then at the end everyone invaded good-naturedly, because FC United had won their second successive promotion. The win had been secured at precisely the moment that one of the steam trains rattled majestically past the picturesque Riverside ground and to the predictable strains of "We won the football league again, down by the Riverside" we began our farewells to the North West Counties Football League who had generously given us our start.

If you want to relive some of these memories, put this date in your diary for a friendly game against one of the many friendly clubs we met in our early days.

Further match information to follow.
