Friendly v Sutton Town AFC, Saturday 10 July 2010

FC United’s programme of pre-season friendlies will kick off on Saturday 10 July 2010 against the Central Midland League Supreme Division runners up, Sutton Town AFC, who are based in Sutton-in-Ashfield, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.

There was a previous club known as Sutton Town FC who disbanded in 1997, but this club’s history began in 2007, when Sutton Town AFC was formed to replace North Notts FC, who had folded that season.

Despite North Notts being in the premier division of the Northern Counties East League, the re-formed club were forced to start life 3 levels lower in the Premier division of their current league. They were promoted in their first season to the Supreme division and are now waiting to hear if they can get into a step 6 league, one below where they were before 2007.

Sutton’s ambitious young manager, Mark Shaw told us "We’re a good footballing side and we’re very keen to climb up the leagues, at least back to where the club was originally. We’re looking forward to hosting FC United and the fans will have a great day out".

FC United manager Karl Marginson readily agreed to this friendly saying: "With the Northern Premier League starting later this season, it will be quite an early game, so the players won’t have been back in training for long. I know Mark’s team will give us a good run out for the first of our friendlies."

Margy added: "I’m expecting this to be a great day out, a bit like when we played Studley." The Reds won the Jimmy Davis Memorial Cup game against Studley on 14 July 2007 in glorious sunshine.

Further details about the game will be announced later.
