Fantastic day for local schools

Dozens of school children from Trafford competed for the FC United Trafford Trophy on Thursday at St Alphonsus School, which saw all the nail biting drama you’d expect in a cup competition!

Seven teams from across the district took part in hot conditions, with a high standard of football on display from all involved. The qualifying stages saw the Year 4/5 team from Victoria Park, and the Year 6s from Gorse Hill both emerge as undefeated favourites for the finals.

In the final stages Kings Road overcame St Alphonsus in the semi-final of the Year 4/5 event and then faced Victoria Park in a tense final. Nil - nil at full-time, the game went into extra time, but with no golden goal after five minutes, it came down to penalties. After five attempts each, it was 3-3, but a jubilant Kings Road eventually won out 4-3 in the sudden death shoot out.

In the Year 6 semi-finals Gorse Hill beat Victoria Park 4-0 and Kings Road got one past St Alphonsus to reach the final, which saw Gorse Hill retain their clean sheet with a goal in the last seconds that saw them clinch the tournament 1-0.

Club Development Officer John Thomason was delighted with how the day went, he said: "Overall it was a fantastic day for the pupils and staff, with each young person taking home an FC United medal presented by Board Member Adam Brown.

"FC United would like to thank the young people and schools involved, as well as North Trafford Athletic and the referees, for making the day such a success."??
