FC United women's team play Wigan Athletic this Sunday

FC United’s women’s team play their second ever game this coming Sunday, 5 August 2012, with an away fixture against Wigan Athletic Ladies.

The game is a friendly but should be a stern test as FC’s women’s squad continue their preparations for their first-ever season in the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League. Wigan Athletic Ladies currently play in the North West Women’s Regional Premier League, which is three steps above the level FC United will be playing in next season, so the game promises to be a tough test.

Joint manager John Marsden is confident that the players will relish the challenge on Sunday. "Wigan Athletic Ladies are a well established club and are sure to be tough opposition for us, but we showed in our first game against Middleton Athletic Ladies last month that we have goals in the team and are capable of playing a brand of attacking football that will trouble any opposition," he said.

The match is being played at Garswood United Football Club and kicks off at 3pm. Admission is free and there will be a bar and a barbecue for spectators. Wigan have produced a special souvenir charity programme for the game with all the proceeds going to Cancer Research. "The support we had for the game against Middleton was a massive boost for the players and I hope FC United fans will turn up on Sunday to support the team again. As well as putting in a good performance, hopefully we can help Wigan Athletic Ladies raise money for a good cause too," said John.
