Expect more cup drama as FC United take on Kendal

FC United’s run of cup games continues this Sunday at Gigg Lane when we host old rivals Kendal in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup sponsored by Budweiser.

The Reds are now just two victories away from reaching the First Round Proper for the second time in our history, so the players should be really fired up. They clearly were in midweek, when three cracking goals from Jake Cottrell, on his 150th appearnce for the club, Nicky Platt and David Birch saw FC United safely through to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy with a 3-1 replay win at Mossley.

United very nearly made a mess of the original Trophy tie last Saturday though, when they had to stage a dramatic comeback from 3-0 down to earn a reprieve - something that disappointed and pleased manager Karl Marginson.

Margy said: "I think the first half of the match here last Saturday was one of the worst displays from an FC United team so far. I’ve struggled to put my finger on why we were so bad. The only conclusion I can see is that certain players think less effort is needed to beat certain teams. As anyone in football will tell you, it is a very dangerous attitude to have, especially in a cup competition. We got the lads in at half-time and I shouted at them a lot."

Looking at the positives though, Margy added: "I was chuffed for Chris Amadi, who scored twice and was very impressive all round. I was very happy with the professional way the players approached the replay on Tuesday night at Mossley. The lads came out and did their jobs. The same must go for Sunday’s match."

Looking ahead to Sunday, Margy said: "Kendal are below us in the league, but that doesn’t matter one bit. We have to match or better their workrate if we are to beat them. We don’t have the greatest record against Kendal and they will come here thinking they have a chance of causing a little upset. But I’m confident the lads have learned their lessons from last weekend and we will be ready, in every sense, for the challenge."

Get yourself to that football ground. Kick off is at 3pm and all the usual attractions - Megacabin, Course you can Malcolm, social club, main stand bars and membership stalls - will be open for business this Sunday afternoon.
