Grafting approach pays off

We rode our luck on Saturday, but we got a 2-1 win at Chorley in the last three minutes of the match. I think you make your own luck though and we worked hard as a team and defended superbly from the forward line all the way through the side.

Chorley pushed us very hard as they always do and the crossbar saved us a few times, but we’ve been unlucky several times this season and not got what we deserved so I won’t be dwelling on that! Sometimes that happens in football and you have to take the rough with the smooth.

Before the game in the dressing room we chatted about how we would be in for a hard afternoon. It’s always like that at Chorley and last Saturday was no different. Apart from defending well, we played some great football and that’s what got us the result in the end. I don’t think we did anything radically different in the run up to the game other than remind each other that we needed to graft throughout the team.

That grafting approach was clearly seen against Chorley when the game was finely poised at 1-1. Some teams playing away from home might have settled for a point but that’s not the FC United way. We’ll never settle for a draw and prefer to push on for all three points - we’re an attacking side and we know that’s how our supporters expect us to play.

The winning goal when it came was a special one. I couldn’t believe that Matty Tierney was having a shot from so far out - I thought It was only me who shot from such a distance! When his free kick flew in I was delighted for him and the team. It was great to see the reaction of the fans and that’s why we ran over to them at the end of the game to celebrate.

A win makes all the difference, and especially one where we get a late winner. Our supporters celebrated loudly after the game and we know how much it means to them, especially when we turn over a top side like Chorley.

This Saturday sees us visit Blyth Spartans for the first time in what will be another difficult game. We’ll be looking to take our form from the Chorley game into that match and hopefully, if we keep grafting, we’ll get a similar outcome.
