Match abandoned - FC United v Witton Albion

Boxing Day’s game between FC United and Witton Albion was abandoned after 10 minutes due to a waterlogged Gigg Lane pitch. FC United would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to all those supporters who made the trip to Gigg Lane.

Details of the rearrangement will follow as soon as possible.

On his arrival at the ground the referee inspected the pitch and deemed that the surface was playable. The referee inspected the pitch again prior to the kick off and after consultation with both managers agreed the pitch remained playable. Whilst it began to rain before kick off it was not possible to know how much rain would fall and if the pitch would be able to take the additional water. Both managers agreed that the only option was that the game should go ahead as scheduled, though contingencies were put in place to deal with the possibility of abandonment, including the handing out of vouchers valid for the rearranged fixture.

Unfortunately persistent rainfall resulted in surface water across large areas of the pitch and the referee had no option but to abandon the game after only ten minutes.

It was not possible to give refunds to supporters exiting the ground, instead supporters were given a voucher as they left the ground. This voucher will be valid for the rearranged fixture once known.

Refunds will also be available at the next home fixture at Gigg Lane. An announcement of those arrangements will be made on this website before the game.

Witton Albion supporters will also be able to receive a refund at Witton’s home fixture on New Year’s Day against Nantwich. Arrangements will be posted on Witton Albion’s website.

Unfortunately no refund can be given without a valid voucher.
