Youth triumph at Curzon Ashton

As the weather did it’s best to prevent the Judicial Review verdict being celebrated with a game of football, the Youth Team were grateful to be scheduled for the 3G pitch at Curzon Ashton. A crowd of over 100 saw them take full advantage with a 5-0 win with goals from Yousif Yousif, a Lewis Lacy penalty, two strikes from Kane Hughes either side of a fine Liam Ellis strike. The last three may have been in the last ten minutes of the game, but merely gave a score line that reflected the visitors control over the game.

FC United started brightly with Mike Taylor testing Matthew Green in the Curzon goal several times, although the first real chance of the game fell to the home side in the 13th minute. Only a Matt Musialowski clearance off the line prevented Justin Johnson from opening the scoring. Johnson was probably the Curzon man of the match as most of their attacking play flowed through him.

The first goal came midway through the first half as a throw from Musialowski was swept into the box by Blaine Biggs. Green’s effort to deal with the situation was thwarted when Yousif pounced on a loose ball inside the goal area and fired home. The lads dominated the remainder of the first half, creating a number of chances but failed to truly test Green until late in the half, A Mike Taylor shot in the 41st minute looked destined for the top corner until Green stretched to turn the ball out for a corner.

The second half continued in the same manner with FC dominant and Curzon looking to counter attack. In the 56th minute, Daniel Maynard, who had sought to turn the home defence in all directions, twisted in several of his own before seeing his shot drop just beyond the cross bar. The second goal came shortly afterwards as Daniel passed to Josh Smethurst who had burst into the opposition box before being fouled. The referee awarding a penalty without hesitation and after a delay for Josh to receive treatment, Lewis Lacy had taken command of the situation and fired calmly low to the keeper’s right.

More chances came and went as the game progressed, Kial Callacher saw a looping header come off the bar whilst Taylor and Yousif being particularly unlucky not to add to the score. That was until the last ten minutes of the game. After coming on in the 77th minute Kane Hughes twice broke beyond the home defence fed by fine deliveries to fire past Green in the 80th minute and in injury time. In between those two strikes, Liam Ellis scored perhaps the goal of the day with a drive from at least 25 yards out in the 82nd minute

It was a fine team display everyone making a contribution, although credit should be given to the defensive line, with Ryan Barker, Kial Callacher and Lewis Lacy competently dealing with the home teams efforts. Especially noticeable that even with the game won, Ryan was marshalling those in front of him, jealously protecting his clean sheet.
