FC highlights women in football at Chorley game

FC United is celebrated the role that women play in football and at FC with a special event on Saturday 9 March 2013 called “A Woman’s Place is at the Match???. This is the second year that FC United has held the event, which focuses on the club’s female players, fans, volunteers and staff by highlighting the roles that they play at the club. We’re also proud to be working with our partners Manchester FA, the Co-operative and the National Football Museum.

The main event took place at FC United’s home game against Chorley, where free admission to women’s groups was offered to those who pre-register. The previous evening, on Friday 8 March, to coincide with International Women’s Day FC United hosted the inaugural screening of a new short film ‘A Woman’s Place is on the Pitch’, which profiles the first season of FC United of Manchester’s new women’s team. The screening took place at The Small Cinema at the Miners Arts and Community Centre in Moston.

“A Woman’s Place is at the Match??? focused on the role that women play in football generally and at FC United in particular. The event included an exhibition, presentations on the history of women’s football, a Q&A session with the FC United women’s team, a further showing of the film ‘A Woman’s Place is on the Pitch’, a short video documentary about what FC United means to some of its female supporters, a special themed match-day programme and much more.

FC United volunteer Kay Phillips said: “For some time, women’s football has been the fastest growing sport in the UK, with more than a million women and girls playing the game regularly. The popularity of FC United’s new women’s team is a testament to that and they are now a key part of the club, with many supporters turning out each week to watch their games.???

FC United’s club welfare officer, Chris Boulderstone, said: “Women are involved in every aspect of this football club. The number of female volunteers at FC United would put most other clubs, and many other organisations, to shame. We feel valued and are an equal part of everything and there is no doubt that the club would not function as efficiently without us.???

The “A Woman’s Place is at the Match??? event underlines FC United’s commitment to bringing all sections of communities back to the heart of football and the way the game is run. A special souvenir programme for the day included interviews with several volunteers at the club and members of staff about what it means to be involved with FC United and their thoughts about being a woman in football.
