FC United's women's team win Keele Plate

FC’s women returned from a busy weekend at Keele University with their first item of silverware for the trophy cabinet.

Having been put in the Senior Women’s Group 1, rather than the recreational group they expected, the team decided to use the experience of playing higher level teams as part of their pre-season build up. The group included premier teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Mexico.

Finishing joint third in the group meant FC progressed to a semi-final fight for the Keele Plate, with 1st and 2nd places fighting for the Cup. A tense semi-final against Crewe Alexandra ended 0-0 at full time but was decided by penalties with FC’s stand-in keeper Shellby Wolstencroft saving the vital shot before firing home herself for a place in the final.

A 1-0 victory over Mexican side UNAM Ex-Re saw FC United’s women lift the Keele Plate.

Manager Lee Sutton said he was delighted that the team had stepped up to a higher level and showed what they could do as a young team whilst representing FC United. He added, "This is a great confidence boost prior to a season when we aim to do the double."
