FC United look to climb table as we host Nantwich Town

FC United look to climb table as we host Nantwich TownFC United’s top goalscorer Tom Greaves will face a late fitness test as we attempt to climb back up the Evo-Stik Premier Division table by beating Nantwich Town at Gigg Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Greaves, who has scored 20 goals this season, missed Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Trafford due to a groin strain sustained in the warm up but is hoping to be fit to take on The Dabbers.

Meanwhile, fellow forward Matthew Wolfenden, who was also missing in midweek, is likely to be out for at least two weeks due to an ankle ligament strain he suffered in training and midfielder Dave Birch will also be absent again because of a hamstring injury incurred at Whitby last Saturday.

As well as the injury setbacks, the tenth placed Reds have made a stuttering start to league action in 2014 with two draws and one defeat. However, we are just three points off fifth place and the play-off zone and with games in hand on several of our promotion rivals, so a run of good results will put us right back in the mix at the business end of the table.

As ever, manager Karl Marginson was upbeat and positive in his pre-match preparations. Margy said: "We’ve lost just two matches in the last 16 and we’re capable of going on another good run. We’ve got the same group of players that got us into a great position before Christmas and now they can do it again.

"The most frustrating thing is having games postponed and having to play catch up, which we’re currently doing, because we want to get on a good run and get some momentum going again. But that’s football at this level, we have to deal with it and I’m sure we will."

The Dabbers have also had a tricky start to 2014 with one win, one draw, two defeats and a postponement, so they will not be high on confidence. However, they do have a decent record against FC United at Gigg Lane win three wins, one draw and two defeats for the Cheshire club.

The FC United faithful will welcome back several former players who now play in green and white including; Ben Deegan, Aaron Burns, and Andy Pearson. They will be sure to get a good reception but we’ll be hoping they don’t leave with any points.

FC United of Manchester versus Nantwich Town is this Saturday at Gigg Lane at the supporter-friendly and traditional kick-off time of three o’clock. It’s pay on the gate as usual with prices voted for by our members; £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and £2 for under-18s. Get yourself to that football ground.
