FC United knocked out of Doodson Sport Cup by Carlton

FC United were knocked out of the Doodson Sport Cup after losing our quarter-final 2-1 against Carlton Town at the Bill Stokeld Stadium on Wednesday night.

Tom Greaves put the Reds ahead inside quarter of an hour but the hosts equalised before half-time through Alex Troke and Grant Brindley bagged the winner 11 minutes from time.

The Reds got off to the perfect start with Greaves hooking a cross from the left over his head into the net for his 24th goal of the season.

Breaking the deadlock signalled the start of an assault on the Carlton goal. Matthew Wolfenden forced a great save from on loan goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi before another great move saw Callum Byrne playing a diagonal ball through to Rhodri Giggs, who headed back to Greaves, his shot forcing a great save from Viscosi.

Shortly before the half hour, Carlton equalised when a cross from the left was missed by both Tom Davies and Dave Carnell, allowing Alex Troke to tap the ball in the net.

Before the half-time break, Greaves was again thwarted by Viscosi who made a great save with his legs.

Viscosi was again in the game straight after the restart when he allowed a team mate’s throw in to roll under his foot but he recovered before the ball crossed the line.

Just after the hour mark, Ruben Wiggins-Thomas lobbed the ball narrowly over the FC bar as the home side took a hold in the game.

FC still found Viscosi in fine form with Jerome Wright forcing a save from him but in truth he wasn’t worked enough in the second half and it wasn’t a major surprise when the home side took the lead.

In the 80th minute, a shot from the edge of the box was parried by Carnell and the first player to react was Grant Brindley who slotted home the loose ball.

There was time for one last chance when Dean Stott played the ball in and substitute Matthew Walwyn headed the ball over from close range.

It was a poor second half showing from FC United, which allowed Carlton to progress to a semi-final clash with Skelmersdale, leaving the Reds to concentrate on our run towards the play-offs.
