FC United V Droylsden

It’s another local derby this Saturday and the first time in our short history that FC have played Droylsden at Gigg Lane. After reaching the dizzy heights of the Conference the “Bloods??? have recently fallen on hard times and have yet to win a league game this season.

However, they were only just beaten by Kings Lynn, who are currently in 5th spot, 2-1 on Tuesday evening after holding the lead at half time. Two weeks ago they also looked to be heading for their first win until Barwell equalised in the 94th minute. So nothing can be taken for granted, remember Durham...

This was highlighted by the 2-1 defeat at Carlton on Wednesday evening in the Doodson Cup and Margy’s frustrations at chances missed was evident after the game. “Although the conditions were difficult on Wednesday night, we can have no excuses for not winning a game in which we created ample chances. There was no way to play football on that pitch, but we still should have put the tie to bed in the first half. Now we have to dust ourselves down and put it out of our minds.???

Despite this defeat, FC are coming into a rich vein of form with three league wins on the bounce putting them back into contention for a play-off spot with games in hand on most of their rivals. Margy has been especially pleased with the system of three at the back allowing the wing backs to push on forward.

Liam Brownhill’s crosses with both feet are always a danger to the opposition and Jerome Wright has marauded up and down the left wing like a man possessed since returning from injury. The midfield has provided cover to the back three whilst also supplying ammunition to the twin partnership of Tom Greaves and Mike Norton who have been playing well off each other with Greaves just one goal off being the league’s leading scorer from open play.

Last Saturday was the second highest home attendance of the season and, with plenty of Reds twiddling their thumbs and no United game to go to this weekend, it’s a good time to bring them along to Gigg Lane this Saturday to see if we can get a 2,000 crowd and celebrate with a win at the same time.

FC United V Droylsden, Saturday 1st March, kick off 3pm. Get yourself to that football ground.
