FC United supports Show Racism the Red Card school event

FC United was invited to attend the Show Racism the Red Card School Competition awards ceremony held at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, May 7.

Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s anti-racism educational charity and was established in January 1996. The organisation utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society. The majority of the campaign’s output is the delivery of education to young people and adults in their schools, their workplaces and at events held in football stadiums. Across Britain, Show Racism the Red Card delivers training to more than 50,000 individuals per year.

Winners and guests from all over England enjoyed an afternoon of entertainment in recognition of the inspiring work by young people from the country’s school children.
FC United was invited to present one of the awards in recognition of FC United’s strong stance against racism and FC’s Community Sports Development Manager Paul Bright attended on behalf of the club.

Competition entrants were asked to create something that highlighted how racism has no place in football. The entries ranged from artwork to film and music. The films and music were screened and heard and many of the young people were brave enough to read out their creative writing entries, which were all very well received by the audience.

Paul said: “It was great for our club to be part of a nationwide event highlighting the ongoing fight against racism.

“FC United prides itself on being an all-inclusive club that welcomes everyone from all walks of life. Racism is a scourge on society and has no place in football. It was heartwarming to see this message is well received by young people and their competition entries were inspiring.???

Paul helped present awards along with Fern Whelan from Everton Ladies, patrons of the campaign Gary Bennett, Dave Bennett, ex-Manchester City keeper Alex Williams and Bury’s Efe Sodje, Manchester City Women players Isobel Christiansen and Emma Lipman, Gordon Taylor and Simone Pound of the PFA, Heather Wakefield (UNISON), Collett Cork-Hurst (UNITE), Mandy Beech (Nationwide), Phil Liptrot (Thompsons Solicitors), Tony Higgins (FIF-Pro) and Councillor Luthfur Rahman (Manchester City Council).
