Reserves held by Hyde

FC United reserves were held to a goal-less draw by Hyde at Nicholls. A goal by Tunde Owolabi in the first half was ruled out for a foul on FC fan and ball boy Josh Broadbent in the Hyde goal. This seemed harsh as it seemed that if contact was made it was after Owolabi had headed the ball past Broadbent as they competed for a cross into the box. It was sadly to be the highlight in an afternoon whilst full of honest endeavour, neither side really looked like scoring.

Sam Summerbee could have got the afternoon off to a bright start, having two chances in the opening ten minutes, the first from a corner and the second when dispossessing a Hyde defender on the edge of the penalty area and Jason Fowles shot from 25 yards soon after; all three efforts were straight at Broadbent. Then came the Owolabi header, followed by a neat exchange with Summerbee which ended with a shot off target.

John Pritchard hit the Hyde crossbar on half an hour but was judged to have been offside, Philip Pole in the home goal saved well from Jack Mason and that was more or less that for first half action.

It was the same story in the second half as FC United pressed forward and Hyde defended effectively. Dean Hope worked tirelessly and got on the end of several chances, sadly leaving his shooting boots on the training pitch. Owolabi ran from his own half resulting in his and Pritchard’s rebound efforts being blocked, the latter for a corner. Ryan Saxon broke forward well but snatched at a couple of shots, failing to hit the target.

Koenraad Hendrickx took time out from a fine defensive display to head wide from a corner. This came as the referee awarded the kick for the result of Broadbent and Owolabi competing for the ball. This one looked more like a free kick from the sidelines than the disallowed goal. Owolabi hit the post late on as FC pressed for a winner to no avail. Hyde also hit the bar through Luke Jones although his effort from the wing was more of a cross, even by his own admission.

All in all the credit should go to the two defences, FC recording their second clean sheet of the season. Pole showing great presence of mind, challenging for the ball on the edge of his penalty area, knowing his momentum would take him outside the box he dropped it in a way that made sure the ball could be cleared.
