FC United board agree to support Sheffield FC's bid to return 'home'

Sheffield FC are widely recognised as the world’s oldest football club and their bid to return to their roots in the centre of the city is not the first such campaign.

In the late 1980s supporters at Charlton Athletic launched a long campaign to return to their home, The Valley, which they won in 1992. This was a landmark for the development of the supporters’ movement in the UK, helping to spark a number of independent supporters’ associations.

Also, fellow fan-owned club Scarborough Athletic have just this last month received the news that their own dreams of returning to Scarborough have moved a little closer; and AFC Wimbledon have recently submitted plans for a new stadium back in their home borough of Merton.

There are numerous other examples where supporters have vigorously campaigned, although unsuccessfully, to stop their clubs being moved from their historical locations. This initiative in Sheffield is therefore part of a long tradition of supporters fighting for the right to have their club remain in a place that they regard as the club’s home, a tradition of which FC United is proud to be a part.
