Successful launch of the FC Disabled Supporters Association

Successful launch of the FC Disabled Supporters AssociationThe FC United Disabled Supporters Association was launched prior to our home game with Leamington on 2nd September.

The FC disability team kicked off the afternoon’s events with a game on the 3G pitch at Broadhurst Park, before things moved inside for the official launch. Two representatives from Level Playing Field, Ruth Hopkins and Kieran Reynolds told those in attendance about their work. They had already given interviews with FCUMTV and spoke to another group of supporters who were holding a separate event in the ground. FC’s Tom Conroy updated everyone about his work coaching the disability team followed by Peter Shaw who talked about his plans as Safety Officer at FC and how we might enhance the matchday experience of our supporters. Board Member Adam Wood closed by explaining why the club supports this initiative.

At half-time of the match versus Leamington a number of players from the disability team took part in a penalty shoot-out on the main pitch and in front of the SMRE terrace. Ex-FC keeper Adriano Basso went in nets and the event was warmly received by the FC support.

Following these events the Leamington supporters had a whip-round on the coach home and donated the money to FC to pass on to a charity of our choice. We were delighted to donate the money to LPF to help them in their tremendous work for sports fans with disabilities. Roy Williamson, a club member who helped organise the event stated ’we can’t thank Ruth and Kieran enough for taking time to attend our launch and for their help beforehand. We certainly made use of them whilst they were at the ground and we hope we can work closely with LPF in the future. This is a beginning for us and we have a lot to learn but our wish is to enhance the match going experience of our disabled supporters and to encourage others to come along to FC United in the future.’
