FC United Women set to host inaugural Broadhurst Cup: Everything you need to know
FC United Women will play host to the inaugural Broadhurst Cup on Sunday. The tri-team tournament is part of United’s pre-season preparations, having kicked-off their summer campaign with a 2-0 win over Everton Ladies Development Squad, last weekend. Here are all of the details you need to know ahead of the day...
Who will be playing in the tournament?
Joining United in the tri-tournament will be Stoke City Ladies FC and the Isle of Man Ladies. Having finished 4th in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division (tier 3 of pyramid) last season, Stoke will compete in the newly-named FA Women’s National League in 2018/19 with the tri-team tournament part of their preparations for the new season. As for the Isle of Man, their side recently came runners-up in the women’s football competition at the 2017 Island Games in Sweden.
Where is the tournament being played?
The inaugural Broadhurst Cup will of course be taking place on the home soil that is Broadhurst Park. All four games throughout the day will be played on the 3G pitch, not inside the stadium.
When is the tournament and what is the schedule for the day?
The tournament will take place this Sunday (22nd July), with four games being played on the day. As part of a round robin format, each of the three teams will play against eachother once, with the two teams that total-up the highest number of points at the end of the phase moving onto the final, later in the day.
The first game of the day will kick-off at 12.45pm with the Reds’ coming up against the Isle of Man Ladies. With it being a one-day tri-tournament, games in the round robin phase will consist of two 20 minute halves, with a short 5 minute break in-between.
This is followed by a break for United as Stoke City Ladies are set to take to the field for the first time in the day, they face the Isle of Man Ladies in game 2 that is scheduled to kick-off at around 1.45pm. Again, this is a game of two 20 minute halves, with a 5 minute half-time in-between.
United will then return to complete their set of round robin games, as Stoke City Ladies are the opponents in the third game of the day, scheduled for a 2.45pm start.
The two teams who have tallied up the most points in the round robin phase will then compete for the inaugural Broadhurst Cup, in the tournament’s final, at around 3.30pm with an aim to therefore finishing proceedings just after 4pm. Unlike the round robin format, the final will be a straight 30 minute game with no half-time break. If the score is still deadlocked after the 30 minutes, the two sides will go straight to penalties, in-order to decide a winner.
