The FCUMW midweek rundown - w/c 10th February

Your FCUMW midweek rundown is a weekly roundup and the latest update on all things FC United Women…

1. Fixture change: The Reds will host their third successive home game in a matter of weeks on Sunday (17th February) due to a change in the league schedule. Originally, Luke Podmore’s side were set for a trip to Tranmere Rovers Ladies on Sunday but due to Tranmere’s participation in their respective County Cup, United will now host Accrington Girls & Ladies at Broadhurst Park, instead. FC won the return fixture 4-2 back in November, with Jess McCarrick, Cara Fields, Jess Battle and Aimee O’Keeffe all getting on the scoresheet on that day.

2. Yvette Loukes re-joins the club: Last night it was announced that winger Yvette Loukes has returned to Broadhurst Park following a brief spell at AFC Urmston Meadowside. Loukes, who left United in January 2018, scored nine goals in 12 games for the club having originally signed ahead of the 2017-18 season. Manager Luke Podmore expressed his delight at having Loukes back in his squad: “She [Loukes] knows most of the group well and has already shown her quality in training. I can’t wait to see her in a red shirt again on Sunday.” Neither can we, Luke!

3. Argyle Cup quarter-final draw made: After getting this season’s Argyle Cup defence underway on Sunday with a 3-0 win over Blackburn Community Sports Club, Podmore’s Reds have been awarded with a home quarter-final tie against Cammell Laird 1907 or Penrith AFC Ladies. The Reds are set to have their opponents confirmed on Sunday 24th February when the 3rd Round tie will take place between our two potential quarter-final outfits, with the winner facing the Reds at Broadhurst Park on Sunday 10th March. United beat both sides en route to lifting the trophy, last season.

4. A good day for Cara Fields: The FCUMW midfielder made the perfect return from suspension in Sunday’s win over Blackburn Community. Fields played the full 90 minutes in the 3-0 win, scored the opening goal inside the first ten minutes and picked up the FCUMW Player of the Match award after a solid all-round performance. On the subject of returns, Jess McCarrick completed her three-game suspension by sitting out of the win and is eligible to feature in Sunday’s visit of Accrington Girls & Ladies.

5. Milestone day in the cup: Sunday’s game was United’s 50th cup game since formation back in the 2012-13 season. The Reds have won 39 of the 50, with the latest being Sunday’s victory over Blackburn Community. United have also scored 243 goals in the 50 cup games, averaging 4.86 per game. The milestone comes just a week after we brought up the 100 mark in the league, making it 150 FCUMW games in total (excluding voided games). Here’s to the next 150 and beyond!
