Brighouse Town end Women’s FA Cup Run

Brighouse Town end Women’s FA Cup Run

On a dismal, wet afternoon on Broadhurst’s 3G, FC United’s women saw their FA Cup dreams dashed by a thoroughly solid, professional performance from high flying National League side Brighouse Town on Sunday. United took the lead on the quarter hour with an excellent strike by Jordon Bailey. However the lead lasted just 4 minutes as Ananne Parnham levelled just 4 minutes later with Captain Annabelle Cass giving Town the lead from the spot as the half ended 2-1 to the visitors. Brighouse scored three without reply in a dominant second half; Charlotte Proud grabbing a brace and Parnham adding her second also.

United kicked off the tie and won the game’s first corner inside 5 minutes with Brighouse clearing well. The first quarter hour was relatively even although Brighouse were starting to find their feet and composure; edging the early battle for possession. However, as the visitors pressured a back-pass to Chloe Ainsworth, the FC keeper cleared superbly to the right wing where an equally brilliant first touch and control by Jess McCarrick saw the No17 curl a superb ball behind the Town defence into the path of Bailey who fired across the keeper into the bottom corner to open the scoring.

The lead wasn’t to last long unfortunately and Ananne Parnham was at the receiving end of a swift Town break firing high into the top corner at Ainsworth’s near post. Ten minutes later after a period of consistent pressure, Brighouse were in behind the FC backline and bearing down on goal when a rash challenge came in giving referee Jack Carr no option but to award a spot kick. Captain Cass stepped up and slotted the ball home to Ainsworth’s left giving the visitors a lead they never looked like relinquishing as the half ended 2-1 to Brighouse.

Town got the second half underway with United enjoying the better of the possession during the opening exchanges and on the hour the red’s had possibly their best opportunity to force an equaliser. Shaunna Jein drove determinedly towards the edge of the Brighouse box and slipped a square pass into Bailey who showed quick feet to force an opening for a fierce drive from 18 yards. Katie Kefford got down well to her left to parry the effort around the post at the expense of a corner delivered by Kirsty Chambers right into the danger area. Fran Davies was in the right position to force the ball goalwards but Kefford was on hand again to smother the danger.

The visitors introduced former FC United starlet Chloe Wilde who was immediately in the thick of the action forcing a hasty defensive clearance that dropped invitingly for Charlotte Proud to loft a half volley into the top corner of Ainsworth’s goal from fully 25 yards. Inside the final quarter hour and Wilde exploited space down the left cutting into the area and clipping a lovely ball back from the bye-line for Parnham to place her shot across the dive of Ainsworth into the bottom corner.

Brighouse knew the game was won and FC enjoyed spells of possession with some end product with Kate O’Gara and Chambers having long range efforts on target. The visitors however showed their undoubted clinical edge as Cass floated in a delightful ball splitting the FC centre halves where Proud filled the space to lob an elegant volley over Ainsworth from the edge of the area. For shear composure of execution, Proud’s effort was the best goal of the game. As the game slipped into stoppage time O’Gara fed a lovely ball through to Chambers who beat the offside trap to be through one on one with Kefford. Chamber’s shot was well read by the keeper who stuck out a leg to deflect the ball agonisingly just past the post. Shortly after, as the rain poured, Jack Carr called time on FC’s FA cup run and we wish Brighouse all the best going forward.

To add a snippet of perspective for today’s result, last season, in our third FA Cup tie of the campaign, we exited the competition after a 5-0 defeat at home to Chester Le Street who are in the same league as today’s opponents but went on to do superbly well in all other competitions. We have a chance to continue our progress next weekend when we play newly formed Mossley AFC away in the Manchester Cup before returning to league action a week later at home to Morecambe once again. Get yourselves to those football grounds and help the team get the season back on track.

Report by Rob Fullen - wheeled out of reporting retirement in support of this season’s correspondent Phil Bradbury who is currently receiving treatment in hospital for a blood clot in his leg. All at FC United wish Phil a full and speedy recovery and we look forward to welcoming him back to games as soon as possible.

FC Player of the game: Chelsea Patient – a solid defensive performance in a game when United’s defence was under significant pressure for large spells of the game.
