Big Coat Day at FC United

Big Coat Day at FC UnitedThe final drop-off for our annual Big Coat Day will be at the Integro Cup game at home to Sheffield FC on Tuesday 21st January.

The drop-off had originally been planned for 11th January but our scheduled home game against Stafford was postponed to make way for our FA Trophy tie at Barrow.

Big Coat Day, FC United’s collection of coats, warm clothing and footwear to distribute to homeless people, has been a regular, and hugely popular, feature of the club’s community work since 2005 and down the years the club has worked with a number of charities to help get warm winter clothing to those most in need in the Manchester area.
This year the club will be working with two partner organisations – Loaves and Fishes and Hope Direct – to distribute the items across the city. Vehicles will collect items on the evening of the 21st January to begin getting the warm clothing out to those who need it.

Each winter it’s reckoned that around five thousand excess deaths occur in North West England simply because of a lack of heating or warm clothing. That translates to roughly one death every thirty minutes or so during the winter months; deaths that shouldn’t happen and that can be prevented relatively easily.
Big Coat Day represents FC United’s annual attempt to address this issue locally. We have collected around 5 tonnes so far this season, which is a tremendous effort, but there is a need for more.
So please have a last-minute rummage round your cupboards and drawers and see if you have any spare items of warm winter clothing or footwear that you would like to donate and bring these to Broadhurst Park ahead of the Sheffield game.

Items required include: warm clothing; rucksacks and backpacks; sleeping bags; sturdy shoes and trainers; gloves, hats and belts; waterproofs; new socks, underwear or thermals; and toiletries including sanitary products, toothpaste, toothbrushes and wet wipes.
