Trio set to bow out

FC United veterans Darren Lyons and Dave Brown will bring the curtains down on their playing careers on Saturday and manager Karl Marginson may join them on the pitch for one last hurrah.

Margy has not played in a competitive game since suffering a knee injury whilst turning out for Flixton two years ago, but with the title safely in the bag, the 36-year-old is considering giving himself a 10 minute cameo role as a substitute in the final league game of the season against Formby.

The former Rotherham and Macclesfield striker said: It might be a bit selfish, but I want to end my career on a high and it’s something I’ve been mulling over. I’m sure I’ll get some stick from the fans, but they’ll shut up when I belt one in the top corner!"??

Margy also paid tribute to player-coach Darren Lyons: Without doubt he is the best crosser of the ball I’ve played with and he has always been a model professional."??

I’d like to agree with that,"?? was Darren’s response with a smile before he added: It’s great when people you respect like Karl speak highly of you like that."??

The former Bury, Macclesfield and Altrincham winger admitted that retiring had been a tough decision to make. He said: I’d like to have played a bit more this season but we’ve got some good young lads so I felt the time was about right to hang up my boots and Saturday will be a great way to do it."??

And Darren, who will continue his coaching role with the club, added: Playing for FC United has been surreal. It’s not like playing for a non-league club because of the fans, they are a different class and without them I could have hung up my boots years ago. I hope I’ll be involved with the club for many years to come."??

Margy also heaped praise on defensive stalwart Dave Brown: He has been a pleasure to play with and a fantastic leader. Although it’s his last game it won’t be the last you will see of him at FC United."??

And Dave, who couldn’t tear himself away from the club and rejoined weeks after initially leaving early in the season, paid his own glowing tribute to the fans. He said: I’d like to thank everyone at the club especially the supporters. The supporters make it a pleasure to put on the red shirt and playing in front of such support is what every player dreams of. The supporters are the club."??
